Chapter Nine
Rosie wasn't in school the next day. Instead, she was in hospital.
Her parents had reached home around ten minutes after Rosie had taken the pills. They had arrived at the lawyers only to be told that their lawyer was not in, as in his part of town, the storm had hit much earlier and he had been unable to make it to office after his afternoon break, what with the low visibility. The secretary told them that she had been trying to contact them but it appeared that cell phone lines were down. Rosie's parents had immediately started for home, but had been stuck in the storm for an hour. They got there at just the right time.
They came into the kitchen and saw their daughter lying on the ground, pills spilt all over the marble floor. As traumatic as it must have been for both of them, Rosie's father managed to keep a straight head and immediately check her pulse. Her heart was still beating, so they called 911 immediately from their landline which was still working. Thankfully, the hospital was near their house, so the ambulance was able to arrive quickly, even with low visibility outside. Rosie was rushed into the emergency room, and her stomach was flushed. Her parents waited outside, tense and holding on to a string of hope. After an hour, the hardest hour of their lives, the doctor came out of the room where Rosie was being treated to tell them that everything was going to be alright-that their daughter was going to pull through.
They saw Rosie lying on the white hospital bed, with all sorts of wires and tubes hooked up to her. The doctor told them that she would need to stay there for a few more days, so that they could keep a check on her and make sure that all of the toxins were gone from her body, or at least down to amounts which her body would be able to sustain. He told them that although she would be discharged within days, she would need to see a therapist at least weekly for quite some time. He asked them the question that they knew was coming, but didn't want to think about: "do you have any idea why your daughter would try to kill herself?" It was then that Rosie's mother remembered the crumpled up piece of paper that she was clutching in her right hand. With trembling fingers she opened it up, and she skimmed through it with tear-filled eyes. The doctor watched her with a sympathetic gaze.
Mrs. Evans looked up, still shaking. "She was being bullied," she whispered.
Rosie woke up the next morning, around ten o'clock. She didn't know where she was. She looked around, and all she could see was white. There were flowers by her bedside-Carnations, which her mother had run out to buy that morning. She tried to sit up, and managed to do so, but with great pain. She looked down and saw that her leg was in a cast.
